How to Prevent Boiler Tube Wear and Extend Service Life-Antiwear tile

What are Boiler Tubes Erosion Shields?

Boiler Tubes Erosion Shields (also known as Anti-wear Covers, Antiwear tile, Wear Protection Plates, Anti-wear Shields, Anti-wear Cover Plates, Anti-corrosion Cover Plates, Boiler Climbing Pipes, or Wear-resistant Pressure Plates) are essential accessories for heating surface tubes in power plant boilers. They are used in combination with Snap Rings.

Application Locations & Functions

Erosion Shields are primarily installed on the windward side of heating surface tubes such as:

  • Superheaters
  • Reheaters
  • Economizers
  • Water-cooled Wall Pipes
  • Induced Draft Fan Blades (special design)

Their key functions are:

  • Protecting boiler pipes from particle impact erosion
  • Reducing pipeline wear
  • Extending the service life of heating surface tubes

These are specialized boiler accessories, most commonly used in power station boilers, with limited application in small boilers. Some coal chemical industry equipment also utilizes them.

Service Life of Erosion Shields

The service life varies by boiler type and installation location. Typically, it aligns with the boiler’s overhaul cycle (3 to 5 years). During each maintenance, partial erosion shields are replaced or retrofitted based on:

  1. Severe thinning beyond tolerance limits
  2. Detachment during operation due to insecure initial installation
  3. Severe deformation compromising protection capability

Additionally, shields are retrofitted onto uncovered tubes if inspection reveals wear progression, preventing boiler tube bursts.

Materials for Erosion Shields

Material selection must consider the operating environment, working conditions, and media properties. Key materials include:

CategoryGradeProperties & Applications
Stainless Steel304Good corrosion/heat resistance; general corrosive environments
316LSuperior chloride corrosion resistance; chemical/marine applications
321Titanium-stabilized; resists intergranular corrosion; high-temperature zones
310SExcellent high-temperature oxidation resistance; furnace chambers (>800°C)
Heat-resistant SteelZG40Cr25Ni20Si2High-temperature strength & oxidation resistance; furnace wear parts
HK40Used for furnace bed plates & erosion shields
Alloy SteelCr/Ni/Mo-alloyed steelsEnhanced wear/corrosion resistance & high-temperature performance

Custom anti-corrosion protective layers for boiler tubes are also available.

Specifications & Manufacturing

Key Parameters:

  • Thickness: 2mm, 3mm, 4mm, 5mm (selected based on wear severity and thermal conductivity needs)
  • Cross-section:
    • Semi-circular (180°) for smooth tubes
    • 120°–160° for finned tubes (e.g., water-cooled walls)
  • Types:
    • Straight shields
    • Inner/outer-curved shields
    • Side-curved shields
    • S-curved shields
  • Length: 20mm–3000mm (common: 1000–2000mm)
  • Inner Diameter: Tube outer diameter + 1–3mm (thermal expansion allowance)

Bent Shield Requirements:
Design drawings must specify:

  • Tube outer diameter (OD)
  • Bend radius R (to tube centerline)
  • Bend angle
  • Straight segment lengths on both sides of the arc

Manufacturing Process:

  • Press-formed using high-pressure machines and professional molds
  • Bent shields: Press-formed or bent on specialized tube benders
  • Features: Smooth surface, aesthetic finish, excellent weldability (no weld detachment)

Snap Rings:

  • Opening angle: 190°–200° (vs. shield’s 180°)
  • Quantity: 2–4 per shield, spaced 200–500mm apart
  • Installation: Overlapped and welded to shields
